Alexander Calder - Inventor of the Mobile
Kinetic Art | Kinetic Sculpture | Art in Motion
You may not recognize his name, but you'll certainly recognize his art.
There are names that are better known than Calder's, but how many artists can lay claim to actually inventing their own type of art? Calder can - he is credited as the inventor of the Mobile.
As a fan of Calder's work, my disappointment in creating this webpage is that a two-dimensional computer screen can't really demonstrate the beauty of a three-dimensional, moving piece of art. See his work in person if you can.

BTW - the inventor of the mobile was a painter, too!
Alexander Calder was a well known Mid-Century artist. Although common place now, his kinetic (moving) sculptures represented a new art form at the time - he is credited as the creator of the mobile.
